Button Copy Signage

State Type Description Date
mo stl/bgs_i44-266.jpg I-44 eastbound exit 266, Lewis Rd. Several interchanges in this area of southwest St Louis County still had what was apparently the original signage, when this photo was taken. Because the signs were weathered and the road was being resurfaced anyway, I assume that by now they've been replaced. Note the exit tab on this one was added fairly recently. 2006-07-16
in other/in/bgs_i64-57.jpg I-64 exit 57, US 231. Button copy. It is unusual to put two cities on one line of a BGS, as is done here. 2006-04-07
mo stl/bgs_i170-mcknbtn2.jpg Old overhead above Delmar Blvd. at its interchange with I-170 and McKnight Rd. 2006-04-01
mo 2008-04-27/PICT0099.JPG A nice shot of the buttons on these overheads that once hung over Hanley Rd. at 40. 2007-02-14
in other/in/bgs_i70-stl.jpg Nice button copy on an overhead at an entrance to I-70 in Terre Haute, with St Louis as the control city. Indiana didn't put a period after the abbreviation here. 2006-05-18
mo stl/bgs_kh_at_40.jpg Button-copy overheads at the onramp to Highway 40 from Kingshighway Blvd (in St Louis). Pretty much all of the button copy remaining along Highway 40 is at the onramps. The shields are printed on modern reflective sheeting; presumably, these replaced old US 40 shields in or around 1988 when I-64 was commissioned through St Louis. Also of note is the fact that there obviously used to be another sign panel to the left of these two; notice the remaining mountings and lighting. 2006-01-21

il il/bgs_rfd-tollway2.jpg In Rockford, this BGS sits at the entrance to the Illinois Tollway. I am fascinated by signs that generalize destinations as states instead of cities. Also, note the uniqueness of going either "North" or "East". I explain below. 2006-08-17
il il/bgs_i88-dixon.jpg At the entrance to I-88 from the city of Dixon. Nice buttons. 2005-08-16
in other/in/bgs_i70-78.jpg I-70 exit 78, Harding St, Indianapolis. Unlike the abbreviation for "Saint" above, the period is included here, as it usually seems to be in Indiana. 2006-05-18
il il/bgs_i88old.jpg An archaic sign gantry on I-88. I'm basing that on the button copy and the look of the US/IL route shields, in addition to the lack of exit numbers. This was located in a road construction zone, so it may have been replaced by now. 2005-08-16
il il/bgs_chi-fullerton.jpg Sign gantry over the Kennedy Expressway (I-90/94) in Chicago. Check out that skyline. 2005-08-21
il il/bgs_chi-ike.jpg Overhead for I-290 (Eisenhower Expy) on the Kennedy. From what I understand, the Eisenhower is where the Kennedy becomes the Dan Ryan Expressway. 2005-08-21
il il/bgs_chi-loop.jpg Distance sign above the Kennedy, giving distances to Loop destinations. 2005-08-21
mo stl/misc_i64-btndist.jpg Button-copy distance sign on 64/40 downtown. 2005-09-16
oh other/oh/bgs_i70-24.jpg Button-copy overheads for OH 49 northwest of Dayton. 49 is multiplexed with I-70 for the 2-1/4 miles between the exits shown here. 2006-05-18
oh other/oh/bgs_dayton.jpg Mileage sign for Dayton exits from I-70 with a button I-75 shield. Ohio seems to have kept using these after other states changed to using "peel-and-stick." 2006-05-18
oh other/oh/bgs_i70-englewood.jpg Seemingly old, all-button overhead at the I-70 onramp from Main St. in Englewood, west of Dayton. It appears that the overpass is newer than the sign attached to it. 2004-05-15
mo 2008-02-17/PICT0034.JPG Vintage button BGS at the onramp to I-55 North from Missouri K in Cape Girardeau. A nice find. Note that Perryville is used instead of St Louis as the control city. 2007-07-18
al 2008-04-27/IMG_0423.JPG Overheads above Governors Dr. in Huntsville. The middle two panels are newer than the 14th Street panels, which use buttons. There likely used to be panels referencing AL 20, the old designation of I-565, in the middle. 2008-03-05

wi other/wi/bgs_i3990-177.jpg I-39/90 exit 177, WI 11. 2005-08-17
il il/misc_rfd-northeast.jpg Just after seeing the sign above, you would see this setup at the actual onramps. Rockford is the "corner" in the Tollway, hence the "north" and "east" banners. 2006-08-17
al 2008-04-27/IMG_0439.JPG Ancient trapezoidal recreational overhead above US 31 in Decatur for Point Mallard Park. I'm not sure what it was when the sign was posted, but it is now a water park. 2008-03-29
il il/misc_tollwaymm.jpg I had never seen button-copy mile markers until I traveled the Tollway. This one is in Rockford, although I noticed most mile markers toward Chicago were this way too. 2005-08-15
mo 2008-02-17/PICT0086.JPG A view of the intersection of Hampton and Oakland, footsteps south of the Hampton interchange with 40. The overheads are pretty old and I expect them to come down during the rebuilding of the highway. Note the layout: traffic entering 40 eastbound takes the ramp crammed between Oakland and the offramp from 40 for southbound Hampton. The extremely tight curve of the offramp means it's probably bound for a makeover during 2009. 2007-11-17
mo 2008-02-17/PICT0088.JPG Close-up of a button BGS over Hampton as it passes over 40 and enters Forest Park. 2007-11-17
mo stl/bgs_i44_btn.jpg Directional sign for the onramp to I-44, entirely in button copy. A classic. This sign hangs over southbound Lindbergh Blvd, exit 277A-B. 2006-01-21
il 2008-02-17/2.jpg Button signage for universities in Bloomington. 2007-08-17
mo stl/bgs_i255-1c_btn.jpg Button copy signage at I-255 exit 1C (Lemay Ferry Rd) in South St Louis County. (I-255 and I-270 form a loop around St Louis; the eastern half is 255 and the western 270.) This has since been replaced. 2005-09-09
il 2008-02-17/3.jpg Classic Illinois: Brown square-stock framework supporting button BGSes with full-width exit tabs. I-55 in Bloomington. 2007-08-17
mo 2008-02-17/IMG_0123.JPG Overhead for the 40 onramp from Grand Blvd. just south of Reinert Hall (SLU) and the Mothership Del Taco. 2007-12-18
mo stl/misc_kinswood-btn.jpg Button-copy guide sign at the Kinswood Lane intersection, following the sign above. 2005-09-09
mo 2008-02-17/IMG_0188.JPG Button overhead at the onramp to 40 from Brentwood Blvd. The buttons have held up well, it appears. 2007-12-22
mo stl/bgs_hanley-eager.jpg Button-copy diagrammatical sign at the Hanley Rd exit from 64/40. The sign shows Eager Rd, which acts as a frontage road in this area, splitting from the offramp. 2006-02-05
mo 2008-02-17/IMG_0193.JPG Now-familiar "CLOSED" banner posted over old 40 onramp signage. This photo was deliberately overexposed for effect. In Brentwood. 2007-12-22
mo 2008-02-17/IMG_0247.JPG Ancient signage at an I-70 onramp in St Charles. Possibly 1950s vintage. Buttons still working. 2007-12-26
mo stl/misc_uturn.jpg On Watson Road, eastbound drivers have the option of doing a "U" to access westbound MO 366. I think this sign may remain from the days of Route 66, due to the button copy and the odd placement of the MO 366 shield. 2006-01-21
al 2008-02-17/IMG_0355.JPG Two button signs paired with a modern one in downtown Birmingham. 2008-02-03
il stl/bgs_i55-4il.jpg Button copy is not common in southern Illinois, but at Exit 4 on I-55/70 in St Clair County, there is one lone example. 2006-08-13
mo stl/bgs_i70-old-stc.jpg A few places on and around I-70 in St Charles and St Peters have remnants of very old signage, perhaps original from the highway's opening in 1956. This sign is falling into disrepair, but appears to be considered valuable, as it has been kept standing on a wooden frame through construction around it. 2006-08-20
mo stl/bgs_i44-251 An old button-copy BGS for exit 251 (MO 100 West) on I-44. 2006-07-16
mo stl/misc_zumbehl.jpg Old button guide sign on First Capitol Drive in St Charles, for the intersection of Zumbehl and Friedens Roads. 2006-08-20
il 2008-02-17/PICT0005.JPG Illinois-style overhead at I-55 exit 236. 2007-08-17
al 2009-07-03/IMG_0818.JPG Old button BGS on I-59 for I-65. The control city of Huntsville is obviously a cover-up, most likely of Decatur. When this sign was installed, Decatur may have been the bigger of the two cities, but in the years since, Huntsville's growth and national presence has outstripped Decatur's and so the state saw fit to redo the sign. 2009-01-03
